You paste in a student essay, and a confidence score tells you whether a machine wrote it. This is an opinion piece, and I will state my position plainly: your district should not buy that product. Bright Learning builds learning tools rather than detection tools, so we have a stake in this argument, and I would rather you weigh the evidence than take our word for it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Start with the strongest case for buying one, because it is real. Teachers are facing a genuine surge in AI-assisted work that no gradebook was designed to catch, and asking them to police it by instinct is neither fair nor sustainable. A detector, the argument goes, does not have to be perfect to be useful. Treated as one signal among many rather than as a verdict, it gives an overwhelmed teacher a place to begin a conversation, and abandoning detection entirely can look like surrendering academic integrity at the exact moment it is under the most pressure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That case deserves a serious answer, and here it is. A detector&amp;#39;s output is not like a spell checker&amp;#39;s suggestion. Once a score enters a disciplinary workflow, it stops being information and becomes an accusation, one the student must then disprove. And the accusation is not distributed evenly. When Stanford researchers tested seven popular detectors, more than half of the essays written by non-native English speakers on the TOEFL exam were flagged as AI-generated, and one detector flagged nearly all of them, while more than ninety percent of essays by U.S. eighth graders were correctly judged to be human (as ScienceDaily reported on the study published in Patterns). A district that adopts these tools is not buying a neutral integrity check. It is buying an instrument whose errors land hardest on the multilingual students who can least afford to be presumed guilty.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The scale of the problem is a matter of arithmetic, not opinion. When Vanderbilt University explained why it was disabling Turnitin&amp;#39;s AI detector, it did the math out loud: the university had submitted about 75,000 papers to Turnitin in a single year, so even at the vendor&amp;#39;s own claimed one percent false-positive rate, roughly 750 student papers could have been wrongly labeled as AI-written (per Vanderbilt&amp;#39;s August 2023 statement). A district that buys a detector at that volume is not buying accuracy. It is buying a known error rate and applying it to its own children, and it will not be able to keep those errors quarantined as mere signals once they are sitting in a teacher&amp;#39;s queue.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Then there is the question of who has already walked away. OpenAI, the company that built the model most of this anxiety is about, released its own AI text classifier and then shut it down in July 2023, citing a low rate of accuracy (as TechCrunch reported). Vanderbilt, one of Turnitin&amp;#39;s own customers, turned the feature off and said plainly that it did not believe the software was effective, in part because the vendor would not explain how the tool reached its conclusions. When both the maker of the technology and its sophisticated heavy users have concluded the tool does not work, a school board approving a purchase order for it is overruling the people with the most information.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;None of this means the cheating problem is imaginary or that teachers should be left alone with it. It means the money and the political will a district would spend on detection are better spent on assessment that is harder to fake: in-class writing, oral defenses of work, drafts that show their revision history, assignments built around a student&amp;#39;s own context. Those approaches are slower and less tidy than a confidence score, and they ask more of adults than of an algorithm. But they do not manufacture accusations, and they do not aim their mistakes at the students with the least power to fight back. A district&amp;#39;s job is not to catch the most cheaters at any cost. It is to run a system that is fair to the student in front of it, and a tool that fails this predictably and this unequally has no place in that system. Do not buy it.&lt;/p&gt;

Generative AI has made it trivial for a student to submit work they did not do, and for an overloaded teacher grading stacks of essays a week, a detector can feel like the only scalable tripwire available. Take it away, and honest students appear to compete on an uneven field against classmates who quietly outsource the work, while the integrity system loses its one automated signal. If the tools worked, the argument for using them would be strong.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They do not work, and the clearest evidence comes from the people who built them. In July 2023, OpenAI shut down its own AI-text classifier, citing a low rate of accuracy (TechCrunch, 2023). Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin&amp;#39;s AI detector and explained why in unusually concrete terms: at Turnitin&amp;#39;s own claimed false-positive rate of one percent, the roughly 75,000 papers the university submits in a year would produce about 750 wrongful flags, each one a student potentially accused of cheating on the strength of a number the vendor could not fully explain (Vanderbilt, 2023). A district that keeps using a detector to bring integrity charges is leaning on evidence that the model&amp;#39;s own maker withdrew, and that major universities have switched off.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Notice what the accuracy debate obscures. The real problem is not that detectors are imperfect. Every instrument is imperfect. The problem is that a detector verdict gets used as though it were proof, when it is a probability score with no reasoning attached and no way for the accused to interrogate it. In any other setting we would call that a due-process failure. An integrity charge is a serious accusation, and basing it on an un-appealable black box inverts the burden of proof: the student must somehow demonstrate that they wrote their own words, while the tool that accused them owes no explanation at all. That inversion, not the error rate alone, is what makes the tool unfit for the job.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;None of this means schools should shrug at AI-assisted cheating. It means the response has to carry weight a black box cannot. Assessment redesign, in-class writing, drafts and revision history, and brief oral defenses of submitted work all produce evidence a student can actually engage with, and a teacher can actually stand behind. Those methods cost more time than clicking a percentage. They also do not manufacture accusations against the students least equipped to fight back.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So here is the position, and it does not soften at the end. Districts should stop treating AI-writing detectors as evidence in academic-integrity cases, and should say so in policy. Keep them, if at all, as a private prompt for a teacher&amp;#39;s own curiosity, never as the basis of a charge. A tool that confidently accuses the innocent is not a weak version of an integrity system. It is the opposite of one.&lt;/p&gt;

We are stating it plainly: the four-day school week, as most districts are buying it, is a bad trade.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Start with what the schedule is actually sold as. More than 2,100 public schools across 26 states now run four days a week, up from roughly 1,600 schools in 24 states six years ago, and about nine in ten of those districts are rural. In Iowa the count jumped from six districts in 2023-24 to more than two dozen by 2025, and in Colorado two-thirds of districts have moved off the five-day calendar. The pitch to a school board is remarkably consistent: the district will save money, recruit teachers it otherwise cannot hire, and improve attendance.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The problem is that the evidence contradicts all three claims while confirming the one cost boards tend to wave away. Savings land at roughly two percent of a district&amp;#39;s budget, about $300 per pupil, because they come only from reduced transportation, food service, and operations, a thin slice of what a district actually spends. Teacher retention moves by at most one to three percentage points in either direction, set against annual turnover rates of twelve to seventeen percent, so the schedule does not come close to filling the vacancy that motivated it. Attendance shows little to no real improvement. Emily Morton of the Northwest Evaluation Association put it bluntly: the promised benefits have not shown up in the data.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What does show up is lost learning. Students on a four-day week absorb the equivalent of two to seven weeks less instruction per year than comparable students on a five-day week. That is the trade a board is actually making: a measured, repeatable hit to achievement in exchange for a two-percent line-item savings and recruitment gains that the same research says do not arrive.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here is the part that should change how boards decide. The learning loss is not evenly distributed. Districts that hold instructional time at or above thirty-two hours a week show no statistically significant achievement difference from five-day schools, while the districts driving the negative results are the ones that fall below thirty hours. In other words, the schedule can be run without hurting kids, but only if you keep the instructional hours. And keeping the hours is exactly what a budget motive works against. The savings come only from running the building for fewer hours, on transportation, food service, and operations, so the more instructional time a district protects, the more of those hours it keeps, and the thinner the already small savings become. A board that adopts the four-day week to spend less therefore has every incentive to push the school day toward the under-thirty-hour range that drives the loss. Motive and outcome are linked.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The strongest case for the other side deserves a fair hearing. Take a small rural district that genuinely cannot fill a chemistry or special-education post at a five-day salary, where the real alternative is a long-term substitute or an empty classroom. If a four-day calendar helps land even one qualified teacher, a student may end up with more real instruction than the five-day schedule was delivering on paper. Add that families and students, once they have the four-day week, overwhelmingly want to keep it. That preference is a genuine democratic signal, and it is not nothing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But it does not survive the numbers. A recruitment edge of one to three points does not reliably fill that chemistry vacancy, and the University of Oregon&amp;#39;s review of eleven studies found no evidence of large positive effects to bank on. Popularity, meanwhile, measures convenience for adults and teenagers, not what children learned. A schedule can be loved and still leave a cohort behind.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So the honest choice for a board is narrow. Keep five days and attack the actual problems directly, by raising pay for hard-to-staff roles and fixing the vacancies you can name. Or, if a four-day week is truly the only way to staff the building, adopt it with a hard floor of thirty-two-plus instructional hours and tell your community, out loud, that it will not save meaningful money. What a district cannot honestly do is sell the four-day week as a budget fix and a recruitment win, because it is neither, and the bill for that story is paid in weeks of learning that students never get back.&lt;/p&gt;
