NYC Council approves $10,000 payment to school paraprofessionals

The New York City Council voted 49 to 0 to approve a one-time $10,000 payment to most public school paraprofessionals, according to the Council's legislation record. Paraprofessionals work in jobs with students, Chalkbeat reports. The money goes to most of these workers, but not all of them, according to Chalkbeat. Council member Carmen de la Rosa sponsored the bill, and union leader Michael Mulgrew backed it, Chalkbeat reports. But Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not support the payment. Chalkbeat reports that he called the bill a "direct violation" of the Taylor Law, a state labor law. He said pay questions should be settled through collective bargaining. The payment is one-time, so it is not the same as a raise to yearly pay.
